John Burleigh was born in Largs in 1953 and educated at Keil Boarding School in Dumbarton. He is married to Heather and has two daughters and 9 grandchildren.
He was an engineer working for Babcock Power at Torness Nuclear Power Station before going to Jordanhill Teacher Training College and then working as a technical teacher for 23 years in Secondary Schools in Inverclyde. He later moved to part-time and gained a BA in Theology before becoming Port Chaplain for Seafarers Christian Friends Society (SCFS) at Greenock Ocean Terminal.
John previously stood for the Inverclyde West Gourock Ward on behalf of the LibDem Party and then for Inverclyde in the 2024 General Election as an independent candidate. He is now standing for Inverclyde West again as a\ candidate for Reform UK, whose values and principles have a particular resonance. Particular local interests include:
Development of a continental cruise car ferry service to develop the sea gateway potential of Gourock and bring back economic revival to the Clyde with employment opportunities and business start-ups.
A bus pass for all providing a ‘leg up for those seeking work further afield and boosting air quality to the citizens.
Health and wellbeing are priorities. 2024 is now the 20th year of the Park Run. Such initiatives develop community spirit and camaraderie and take advantage of the natural amenity of a seafront location, increasing life expectancy and easing pressure on the NHS.
Crime and shoplifting in Inverclyde has reached unacceptable levels. Not only do should the Police station remain open in Greenock but there should be community hubs to liaise with Police to discuss ways of supporting and preventing this behaviour.
